REIKI

       Reiki:  Usui Shiki Ryoho

I practice a system of traditional/formal Reiki, called Usui Shiki Ryoho.  Over the years since being first introduced to our western culture, Reiki has morphed and changed into various models of the original closed society Japanese version.  At first I was unsettled, thinking that the purity and original effectiveness of the technique might be hindered or negatively changed somehow.  But over the years, I’ve realized how beautiful and how rich the alterations are.  I compare it to a child who is born into the world, influenced by parents, then eventually allowed to explore and grow into a unique individual.

Reiki translated means “Universal Life Energy” according to Mikao Usui (founder) and Hawayo Takata (who introduced the therapy into the United States via the Hawaiian Islands).  “The following description of Reiki comes from Mrs. Takata from her early days of being Chujiro Hayashi's student. ‘The power is unfathomable, immeasurable, and being a universal life force, it is incomprehensible to man.’” (Quoted from Phyllis Furumoto, granddaughter of Hawayo Takata and recognized as the current Reiki Grand Master and lineage bearer of the practice)

In modern language, Reiki is an energy based treatment.  The client remains fully clothed while the practitioner places hands in a systematic pattern upon the head, face, torso, abdomen and back side of the client, holding each position for several minutes.  Many refer to this approach as a literal interpretation of the healing method known as “laying on of hands”.  The client can expect to feel heat, cold, spontaneous twitches, vibration, tingling or other natural occurrences as the parasympathetic nervous system is engaged.  Reiki promotes the relaxation response causing a lowered heart rate, a deeper sense of calm, improvement of the immune system, and lowered blood pressure. Injury or illness recovery may be accelerated.   Continued treatments seem to promote and support long term healing on many levels.  Many times the non-invasive and non-interfering Reiki approach is used to enhance other alternative, chiropractic and/or medical therapies.
